The best “bouchons lyonnais” in Lyon 🥘

When you say “Lyon”, you say “bouchon”!😋

What is a “bouchon lyonnais”?

The “bouchon lyonnais” is a real institution in the region. The capital of gastronomy has several addresses that have made its reputation. These bouchons are a must for any visitor discovering the city of the Gones. These small typical restaurants of the city serve traditional dishes and are known for their friendly atmosphere.

Don’t be surprised, in an authentic “bouchon lyonnais”, the customer is not the king. Indeed, although they are welcome, they adapt to the habits of the owner. A character with an unique glibness.

By the way, why “bouchon lyonnais”?

No, the “bouchon lyonnais” does not come from the cork of the wine bottle, nor from the legendary traffic under the Fourvière tunnel… It goes back to the time of the innkeepers of Old Lyon, who used a bundle of branches (nicknamed “bousche” in old French) that they hung on their door to indicate that supper was ready. Bouchon’ was the diminutive name for the Lyon restaurants we know today.

Among the most famous dishes of Lyon’s gastronomy, there is the quenelle of pike, the “grattons“, the “gratin de cardons à la moelle“, the “tablier de sapeur“or the “cervelle de canut“. You will find all these dishes in the various “bouchons lyonnais” of the city.

In short, a TRUE “bouchon lyonnais” is :

  • An ultra family and friendly atmosphere
  • Gourmet dishes concocted with local and high quality products

To identify the best bouchons in Lyon, keep this logo in mind. If it is affixed to the front of the restaurant, it means that it has been awarded the label of a real “bouchon lyonnais”. This label was created by the “Chambre du Commerce et de l’Industrie de Lyon”, in partnership with “OnlyLyon Tourisme” and the “Bouchons Lyonnais”. It guarantees an authentic and quality experience!

The Bouchons Lyonnais Label also offers a guarantee on the origin and quality of the ingredients used.

On the other hand, there are a large number of tourist traps in the cobbled streets of Vieux Lyon. These establishments which present you with white and red checkered tablecloths, but whose menu is translated into 8 languages serving pasta carbonara with a 30% discount from 3pm to 7pm are to be avoided!

We have decided to reveal our best “bouchons lyonnais” addresses, far from the tourist traps. Whether you’re a local or not, we’re sure you’ll love this selection of restaurants!
